Are Chemical Peels Worth the Money?

We get this question about peels more than almost any other skin treatment we offer. Maybe it's the name chemical peel, or the idea that it's sound like we are dissolving your skin away that turns people off. But the short answer is: YES! Chemical peels are one of the most cost effective skin treatments available. Read more below to learn how peels effectively remove damaged, dull skin, and help deliver skin treatments deeper and more effectively.

How do chemical peels work?

Chemical peels work by removing the outer layers of skin which stimulates your bodies own healing process. Your body then stimulates its own collagen and elastin to treat uneven skin tone and signs of aging.

There are many different types of chemical solutions with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and salicylic acid peels being the most common. Different peels target different skin layers and can be light or superficial, medium depth and deep peels. Light peels focus on the surface of the skin, while medium and deep peels target the deeper layers.

Peel depth depends on the combination of ingredients, duration left on the skin and the volume applied. To achieve an effective peel, ingredients must disrupt the bonds between skin cells and dissolve factors that keep them there.

Agents that disrupt the bonds between skin cells include glycolic acid, salicylic acid and Jessners solution. Ingredients that interfere with other factors holding the cells together include TCA, phenol and croton oil. Chemical peels are targeting the skin cells and leave hair follicles unharmed.

What conditions do peels treat?

Chemical peels are versatile and work on a number of skin conditions. We have different types of chemical peels that chosen based on skin care concerns, desired downtime and risk of complications.

  • Aging: By removing the top layers of skin, the refreshed skin and stratum corneum come back refreshed and tightened. This tightening improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Acne marks: Acne scars respond best to deep peels. To minimize complications associated with deep peels, some professionals prefer to combine a medium intensity peel with microneedling.

  • Sun damage: If treating sun damage is the only concern, than a superficial peel is appropriate

  • Melasma: Superficial and medium depth peels work well to control melasma and even skin tone.

  • Active acne: Superficial peels work well to treat acne lesions.

  • Stretch marks: Superficial peels can help fade the appearance of stretch marks.

What should I expect during my appointment?

Most people tolerate chemical peels well and find the overall procedure quick. Most appointments are 30 minutes or less.

First, your skin will the throughly cleansed to remove all make up and dirt that has built up. We then prep your skin to ensure the correct pH and to improve penetration of our products. Often we use a manual and chemical exfoliation masks. This helps remove the stratum corneum or top layer of skin to ensure the products are penetrating to the correct depth.

Once we prep your skin, we proceed with applying the chemical peel. We apply the peel solution in a systematic way to ensure the surface of your skin is evenly coated. During this process, you may experience light tingling or a burning sensation. We often use a hand held fan to reduce these sensations.

After applying a specific number of passes and leaving the solution on your skin for enough time, we remove your peel. After your peel, we apply post procedure topical agents to promote hydration and healing. We use a combination of hyaluronic acid, skin probiotics and sunscreen to apply to the skin post peel.

What should I do before and after a peel?

Your skin care leading up to and after your appointment are important for optimal results.

  • Avoid sun exposure: To prevent dark spots from getting worse, avoid being in the sun before and after a peel.

  • No retinoids: You should stop using your topical retinoids 7-10 days before and after a chemical peel to avoid irritation. Do not get a chemical peel if you are on oral retinoids.

  • Skin care products: After your peel, taking care of your new skin becomes top priority. After you heal, use active ingredients in your skincare products to that target your concerns.

What can I expect after my chemical peel?

The amount of recovery time depends on the depth of peel used. Superficial peels may not peel at all but are still increasing skin turn over. People consider these peels gentle yet effective. On the other hand, medium to deep peels can have significant peeling for 3-5 days after you receive your treatment.

Results are quick and visible in just a few weeks. For best results, patients often need to do a series of peels. The length of time a peel lasts varies from person to person.

For best results, starting a targeted skin care program with sun avoidance will help minimize frequency of peels. We typically recommend a series of peels each spring and fall for best results.

Are chemical peels dangerous?

Like every medical procedure, chemical peels come with benefits and risks. As a healthcare professional, we must weigh the risks and benefits to determine if chemical peels are suitable for you.

The main risk following a chemical peel is dark spots otherwise known and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This risk is highest in individuals with darker skin types. Following pre and post procedure instructions becomes very important in these individuals to prevent these complications.

Can I be pregnant or breastfeeding and get a chemical peel?

Generally, we avoid chemical peels in pregnant patients. The safety data on chemical peels during pregnancy is inconclusive so its better to wait on potentially dangerous elective procedures. If you're nursing, doctors typically deem superficial peels that don't contain TCA or phenol as safe.

Overall, people consider chemical peels to be safe and effective. We use chemical peels to treat a variety of medical conditions and normal aging. There are different type of peels for different concerns and results. A sequence of therapies is required, followed by maintenance treatments.

Chemical peels are a cost-effective choice and can be paired with other procedures such as facials, microneedling, Botox, and fillers.
