MICRONEEDLING
AT WELLSPRING

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that creates controlled micro-injuries to the skin, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin through the release of growth factors and cytokines. This stimulation results in firmer, healthier skin and reduces the appearance of acne, scars, dark spots, wrinkles, and large pores. Traditionally, a synthetic serum with the precursors needed to produce collagen is used during the treatment but at Wellspring Skincare, we offer a service where your own protein precursors are utilized during the procedure. The serum is called platelet rich fibrin (PRF) and consists of taking a small sample of blood to spin down and extract each patient's own protein precursors and use that in lieu of a lab produced serum.

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure using small needles. This procedure treats common skin concerns like skin texture, scars and wrinkles. The procedure is minimally invasive, with very little down time.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive, cosmetic procedure that utilizes a device with tiny needles. These needles induce controlled micro-injuries all over the skin or blemish.

This stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin through the release of growth factors and cytokines. Creating collagen and elastin makes skin firmer and healthier. This leads to improvements in acne, scars, dark spots, wrinkles, and large pores.

Traditionally, practitioners use a synthetic serum during microneedling that contains precursors for your body to produce collagen. We offer a service that utilizes your own protein precursors during the procedure, instead of using this synthetic serum.

What does it treat?

Microneedling treatments are the gold standard for multiple skin care concerns.

  • large pore size

  • improving the appearance of scars

  • fine lines

  • wrinkles

  • stretch marks

  • skin color flaws otherwise known as hyperpigmentation

  • skin texture

  • skin clarity

The skin pen also leads to skin tightening, improving active acne and works as an effective scar treatment. Microneedling can also enhance the effectiveness of skin care products.

Microneedling is most commonly done on the face and neck but can treat all areas of the body. Plastic surgeons often recommend microneedling after plastic surgery or routine surgical procedures to improve healing and the appearance of scar tissue.

Who is a good candidate for microneedling?

Microneedling is a fantastic procedure for most patients that want an overall skin rejuvenation. To get the best collagen induction therapy, you need to be healthy, with no infections or conditions that slow down healing. You should not have a history of hypertrophic scar formation on your face, otherwise known as keloids.

Microneedling is suitable for all skin types, including darker skinned individuals. If you have a history of bleeding disorder or are on blood thinners, let your provider know before scheduling a treatment.

What is the treatment process like?

We begin the consultation with a thorough skin assessment and discuss the treatment options available. If you have scarring, we need to quantify and determine the type of scar. You may also have your photos taken to compare pre and post treatment. This is also the perfect time to ask any questions you may have.

Once we make a treatment plan and address all of your questions, we thoroughly cleanse and sanitize the skin. We then apply topical numbing to minimize any discomfort. For best results, leave topical numbing on for roughly 40 minutes to one hour.

Next, we will apply a serum to the skin or use PRF if you have opted for that option. We use a state of the art microneedling device which allows us to customize the depth and speed of the needles. This gives us greater control when treating sensitive areas or for targeting specific skin layers during scar and stretch mark treatment.

We use the microneedling pen back and forth across the face, allowing the needles to penetrate the skin. As the needles are moving in and out of the skin, they are also pushing the serum in. This serum helps the skin heal and produce collagen and elastin.

During the procedure, you may experience a scratching sensation. These sensations may worsen around the lips and on bony surfaces like the cheek bones. Light bleeding is common, especially when using deeper needle depths.

Most patients need a series of treatments to see best results. We space your treatments to every 4-8 weeks. You may start noticing improvement in your skin a few weeks after your first treatment, however full results can take months. Results typically last 1 year and maintenance treatments are often necessary.

What are common side effects after treatment?

Most people tolerate microneedling procedures well and experience minimal side effects. In the first 24 hours, redness, swelling, bleeding, bruising and skin tightness are common. Most patients return to normal activities the next day.

We recommend ice for swelling post procedure however most patients do fine without. You should use gentle products that are free of active ingredients until your skin fully heals. You should also avoid the sun for 2-4 weeks.

What is the PRF add on?

Your own blood is full of growth factors used to heal itself. After obtaining PRF from a blood draw, we centrifuge it to concentrate growth factors, platelets, and white blood cells. Concentrating this factors helps the tissue repair and regenerate.

Combining PRF with microneedling boosts your results and lessens your downtime. The procedure creates small channels in the skin to deliver concentrated growth factors to the deeper skin layers. This lead to a more significant impact on skin rejuvenation and repair. Another bonus is PRP is all natural.

Furthermore, research has shown that PRF possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which enhance the healing process. This is what helps PRF reduce redness, swelling and overall downtime.

How often do I need to have microneedling done?

Treatment frequency is determined by many factors, including the specific body area being addressed and the type of improvements needed. For example, if you see signs of aging, doing microneedling once might be enough, especially if you're just starting. From there, we recommend having a maintenance treatment once per year.

If you have significant acne scarring on your face, you may need more aggressive treatments. A common recommendation is one treatment per month for 4 to 6 months, followed by yearly maintenance from there.

For skin concerns on the body, multiple treatments can address concerns without requiring yearly upkeep.

Overall, microneedling remains a valuable skin treatment. This is one of the most affordable cosmetic treatments that gives good results, so our patients keep coming back.

PRF Add On

Protein-rich fibrin (PRF) is a natural substance that is derived from a patient's own blood. The blood is centrifuged to concentrate growth factors, platelets, and white blood cells, which are essential for tissue repair and regeneration. By combining PRF with microneedling, the growth factors are delivered directly to the deeper layers of the skin, where they can have a more significant impact on skin rejuvenation and repair. Furthermore, PRF has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to reduce redness and swelling after microneedling. PRF can also improve the overall texture and tone of the skin, as well as reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars.
