Everything to Know About Kybella

Updated: Aug 13, 2023

A healthy diet and plenty of exercise can help you lose weight, but sometimes, the stubborn fat around your chin stays. If your lifestyle choices aren’t getting you the sculpted jawline of your dreams, Kybella might be your best option.

Kybella is the only FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment for a “double chin.” Unlike dermal fillers, which add volume to the jawline, Kybella removes unwanted fat to reveal your chiseled bone structure. In just a few treatments, you can have a photo-ready side profile. If you’re ready for a slim, sharp jawline, we’ll go over everything you need to know before receiving Kybella injections. Let’s get started!

What Is Kybella?

Kybella is a revolutionary non-surgical injection that dissolves stubborn fat between the chin and neck. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration deemed it safe for use in 2015, and it has been changing lives for people like you ever since.

The primary ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. However, Kybella is a synthetic version of the substance your body already creates. Since Kybella permanently destroys fat cells, you’ll never store fat in the chin or neck again.

Are You an Ideal Candidate for Kybella?

When it comes to Kybella, almost everyone is a candidate for this procedure. Before you receive treatment, your aesthetic injector will check for the following:

  • You’re older than 18 years old and are in good health.

  • You have a moderate amount of fat around the neck and chin.

  • You would prefer to avoid invasive options, such as liposuction.

  • You haven’t seen results from diet and exercise.

Remember that Kybella shouldn’t be used if you’re pregnant. Since it’s a localized injection, it wouldn’t harm your pregnancy, but it’s considered better to err on the side of caution. Some injectors also consider people in their early 20s too young for Kybella, but there are no known health risks associated with getting this procedure at a young age.

If you meet the criteria above, you’re good to go!

What Happens During Kybella Treatment?

Getting Kybella is quick and painless. You could easily get treatment during your lunch break. There’s no major preparation required, though your injector will ask you to avoid any medications or supplements that cause blood thinning a week prior to your treatment, such as:

  • Garlic-based supplements

  • Vitamin E

  • St John’s Wort

  • Aspirin

  • Ibuprofen

First, your injector will cleanse and numb the area to ensure pain-free treatment. Then, your injector will administer Kybella in the submental area. The entire procedure should only take about 20 to 30 minutes.

Shortly after receiving Kybella injections, you’ll experience swelling, which will increase over the next 24 hours. Don’t worry! The swelling means that Kybella is working its magic. These symptoms will subside over the next week, but you can always use ice packs to ease any discomfort.

What to Know Before You Get Kybella

You should know what you’re getting yourself into before any cosmetic procedure, even FDA-approved ones like Kybella. Let’s go over the basics so you’re well-prepared for your consultation!

You’ll Need More Than One Session to See the Results

It’ll take multiple sessions for Kybella’s fat-melting properties to kick in. Most aesthetic injectors recommend three to four sessions every four to six weeks to reveal a sculpted jawline. The number of sessions necessary depends on how much fat you need to eliminate, but you’ll probably notice your jaw slimming significantly by the second session.

There Can Be Side Effects

You should know that while Kybella is a safe, FDA-approved injectable, most patients experience swelling up to 10 days after treatment. In the meantime, you can stick to turtlenecks and scarves to cover the appearance.

In some patients, treating the submental area with Kybella can cause the face to appear droopy because the area is lacking in fullness.

If you’re serious about getting Kybella, make sure that you go to an experienced aesthetic injector to ensure that they place the injections in the correct area. The best injectors will demonstrate their knowledge of the submental region of the face to avoid injecting a vein.

Allow for Downtime After Treatment

Like most other injectables, Kybella treatment won’t require much downtime following the procedure. In fact, you can return to work right after your treatment. However, you’ll want to keep this in mind after receiving Kybella:

  • Shortly after Kybella, there will be tenderness, redness, and swelling for about three to five days.

  • Everyone experiences a different level of discomfort, but it shouldn’t be overwhelming.

  • The downtime you experience depends on how much Kybella your injector uses and how much submental fat you have.

  • The amount of discomfort you experience after Kybella will decrease with each session.

  • Sun exposure won’t cause any problems after receiving Kybella.

Kybella Results Are Permanent

You can say goodbye to your double chin for good! After you receive Kybella, the fat cells in the treated area will die, and your body will naturally flush them out of your system.

Of course, it’s impossible for Kybella to remove every fat cell in the submental region. However, many patients maintain their results. Even if you gain weight after Kybella, you’ll notice that you won’t gain as much fat in the treated region of your body.

You Can Treat Other Areas with Kybella

Kybella was created to treat double chins, but some injectors also use it to treat stubborn fat in other areas of the body. If healthy living isn’t getting rid of fat around the underarms, bra area, lower belly, or even the inner knees, Kybella can help eliminate it for good!
