Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) Injections use your own body's platelets to promote and accelerate healthy growth. If you have ever heard of PRP injections, PRF is the next generation of platelet use, with all the benefits of PRP and much more!

Samples of your own blood are spun to concentrate the plasma, or "Liquid Gold", as its known in the industry, where it is re-injected at treatment sites. Most commonly, PRF is injected under the eyes to reduce darkness and improve volume loss. Traditional filler products in the under eye area often give the appearance of "puffy eyes" or "over-filled", where PRF does not!

What is the difference between PRP and PRF?

The main differences between PRP and PRF is the concentration of growth factors and the protocol for obtaining these factors.

We acquire both PRP and PRF through straightforward blood draws. We then place the vials of blood in a centrifuge, which spins the blood down. This ensure the red blood cells settle to the bottom, leaving the growth factors at the top for extraction.

For PRP protocols, we draw blood with a reagent to separate the red blood cells chemically. The speed at which the centrifuge spins the blood is another main difference. This leads to a higher concentration of RBC free plasma. This also delivers excessive growth factors and stem cells to the bottom of the tube, making it impossible to remove them.

In contrast, PRP treatments utilize a plain glass tube making this proceed 100% natural. The blood spins at a slower speed, keeping more stem cells and growth factors at the top, available for use.

How does PRF work?

Our bodies have the natural ability to repair wear and tear and for wound healing. There are factors constantly floating around in our blood components ready to do just that. These factors stimulate cellular processes that produce collagen and elastin.

When we spin the blood down in our centrifuge, we are specifically concentrating the growth factors and stem cells we want. We then take this growth factors and re-inject them into the treatment area to stimulate collagen and elastin. In turn these plump the skin and restore volume loss naturally. Overall, this leads to a skin rejuvenating process that is natural.

Where can you use plasma treatments?

Platelet rich plasma skin treatments are becoming more popular as patients seek minimally invasive, natural solutions to slow signs of aging. What is the treatment process like?

We start all of our visits with a complimentary consultation to see if you are a good candidate for PRF injections. You should let your provider know if you have chronic medical problems and what medications you take. These factors including your overall health can have an impact on your results.

After the consultation, we begin with a blood draw in our office. Then proceed with the extraction process which takes roughly 5-10 minutes. During that time, the areas of treatment are numbing with topical or injectable numbing medications.

Once we prepare the blood, we proceed with the injections. For the under eye area, we typically use a cannula which is a blunt tip needle. This minimizes the risk of bruising and decreases patient discomfort.

What can I do to prepare for my appointment?

Your results are only as good as your overall health. Taking care of your body prior to your appointment is important for optimal results.

We recommend drinking plenty of fluids and exercising regularly leading up to your appointment. Avoid alcohol, blood thinners, aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen and fish oil before your appointment. It is important to eat a healthy diet, full of lean meats and leafy vegetables.

What are common side effects?

Common side effects include localized swelling, bruising and tight skin surrounding the injections sites. Over the next few days, your body will absorb the excess volume, leaving behind the concentrated growth factors and reducing swelling.

Overall, patients tolerate PRF injections well with minimal to no downtime.

How many treatments will I need?

A customized treatment plan is an important step in the consultation process. There are many factors that impact the number of treatment sessions necessary. These factors include age, overall health, amount of volume loss and number of areas requiring treatment.

Generally, patients require 3 treatments initially, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. We then recommend once to twice yearly maintenance therapy.
