Semaglutide slows down how quickly food is digested, making digestive side effects the most common. Common side effects include nausea, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux and fatigue. More rare complications include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney injury and thyroid problems.
Who should avoid semaglutide injections?
Patients that have a personal or family history of thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplastic syndrome should take take this drug. Common symptoms of thyroid cancer include a thyroid mass, trouble swallowing and voice changes. Patients with a history of pancreatitis should use this medication with caution.
What is the cost of semaglutide?
Since semaglutide does not have a generic yet, the retail price of Ozempic and Wegovy is over $1000 per month. To offset the cost of Ozempic, drug companies may offer limited time discount cards. There have been several studies to look into whether weight gain is a significant concern. In one study, there was weight gain in both the treatment and placebo arm. The semaglutide group ending up with a net weight loss while the placebo arm ended up with a net weight gain.
